Neil and Jamie at home again so distraction guaranteed, not that I need much to distract me. Slow work today. My photoshop skills have become very rusty. Not exactly square one but I've forgotten loads and I was back to googling for help. More disappointment- the stamp stock books I bought aren't as described. Damned nuisance. They are quite cute so I might keep them anyway, but still... annoying. I managed to make it out to Asda today. We were almost out of bread and milk. I bought stuff to make a proper gravy dinner with sprouts even! I was good mum today. Lovely walks in the wood. I love the way the snow lights up the heart of the wood and for a short time, its secrets are revealed. Jamie came out with us this afternoon which is a real rarity. His grace and agility make me feel very old and clumsy in contrast. Sure footed, he ran through the woods with Barney in pursuit and didn't come close to breaking into a sweat. He's amazing. Couldn't resist a snooze this afternoon which most likely means I'll be awake past midnight tonight. May as well try and do some work then or at least some serious reading. Edit: I did neither. Just faffed about online. Tags: art, jamie, snow
oberonia @ 03:49 pm: Beginnings and Other Pep Talks
I've been really feeling the creative flow this year...so far. :) I cleared my writing desk of all holiday wrapping leftovers and junk. As you can see from the picture to the right, the Motivation/Inspiration Board (which will henceforth be called MI Board lol) is about to begin the decoration process. Along with the few items I bought or made myself to put on the board, I received the first two donated items yesterday. YAY! I took photos of everything, of course. No, they aren't all artsy and wonderful. It's more of a catalogue and when I get new pieces in, I will update the photo set. - The Statement. Basically this is the center piece of the board. This is the list of reasons why this board exists. I tried to write it so it gave me advice instead of just a bullet point. The quote at the top was given to me by Dayna. - I bought extra cork squares in case I need to branch out. The board itself isn't very big, so, you know, I prepared lol. - Fake Flowers Don't Die. They don't. They stay pretty...unless one of the dogs gets a hold of it. - It looks like a planet! Because, you know, I'm weird like that. Expand your Universe. - My little tree. I tend to take a lot of inspiration from nature when I write. - A mini calendar of pretty photos. It's all photos of pathways in nature. PRETTY! - One of James Tuck's business cards. James is a creative and inspiring guy. Plus, his card is really pretty. It's a bad photo of it though. lol - Winking Owl Cork from a Chardonnay bottle. It along with a stem of cotton are momentos from a fun weekend. I'm not sure how I'll get the cork mounted on the board, but I'll figure it out. - Wisdom from Sabrina Pandora. Never underestimate the power of a strong and witty woman. - A beautiful picture from Michelle. I *love* the picture on this card. You were right to send it. :)
I also played around taking some self portraits of myself (wow, that was so, "Allow myself to introduce....myself".) with one of my favorite bookmarks. Cheesy, yes. But I totally had fun doing it! the color version

annotating my post from January 1, 2009: My New Year's Resolutions distilled down to twelve words
Less weight. Well, no more. Less spending. Thanks to no raise at work, yes. Less stuff. See above. But still need to triage belongings and chuck some.
More loving. Yes. More joy. Yes. More sleep. Still working on it.
thermalsatsuma @ 06:18 pm: You haul sixteen tons, whadaya get?
It was probably tempting fate, but when the sun poked it's face through the clouds at lunch time I ventured out onto the driveway armed with a shovel and a broom to clear some snow. The first task was knocking the six inches or so of snow off of both of the cars, followed by shoveling that into heaps on either side and finally brushing a nice, tidy path down the middle. I had just about finished when the clouds descended again and gave us another blast of snow to cover over the area I had just cleared. That car windscreen was clear five minutes earlier. Sigh. I managed a reasonable amount of work again, including an epic 90 minute phone conference to talk about development issues with our web app. I used up half the charge on my phone and probably fried my brain into the process, but thems the breaks. Before it got too dark we went for a walk in the woods with a very excitable doggy who kept trying to burrow into snow that was nearly covering him. It was hard going slogging through calf high drifts that were up to the top of my welly boots, but it was worth it for the stunningly eerie landscape in the woods with trees and holly bushes loaded down with snow. These pictures should give you an idea of what the garden looks like now. I like the way the chiminea has grown a rather fetching little cap of snow! I then had another go at clearing the drive again in the rapidly falling dusk and sub-zero temperatures with the result that I am now knackered. I really need to try to get into the office tomorrow - I may be some time ... Tags: daily
summer_moth @ 05:12 pm: First recipe of the year
Hmm...I don't have a cooking icon. Bees will have to do! Yesterday I cooked my first new recipe of the year, so here I am dutifully recording it. Lentil Croquettes with Parsley Sauce From: Vegetarian Kitchen by Sarah Brown (1984) Substitutions: None (note: everything I cook will be veggie, obviously, but I do have some non-veggie cookbooks, so some recipes may involve substitutions)Served with: Brown rice & green veg (specifically, peas), as recommended by the recipe These were tasty and pretty easy to make. Red lentils and various other ingredients formed into croquettes, coated in egg & breadcrumbs and cooked in a little oil. The consistency was good and they didn't fall apart when cooked. The parsley sauce came out a little sweeter than normal because I had to use half cows milk and half soy milk, but you wouldn't really notice it unless you ate it on its own. If anyone ever wants to try making anything I post about, just give me a shout & I'll give you the full recipe :-) Current Mood: cheerful

thornyc @ 09:20 am: One way I'm going to memorialize and remember danbearnyc
I miss Dan so. On a daily basis -- several times a day, if I'm doing a lot of surfing and seeing outré, fabulous, or outrageous things. Or see a rare movie playing at the Film Forum or on TMC. Or see anything bacon related. Or.... I've decided that one way to remember Dan and honor his spirit is to select one of his fabulous (there's that word again) user icons, upload it and add it to mine, and use it when appropriate -- or even just when I miss him.

It was hard to choose. I love and cry just looking at the disco kitty one, one of the ones he used frequently, almost as a default, realizing that his worldliness and intelligence as well as his witticisms and bon mots and repartees will no longer be gracing my comments or Friends pages. But ultimately I chose the one of Auntie Mame, because since his death I've learned that was what (who?) he was for hundreds of friends, many of them Real Life ones, but even more online ones, although with time most of those would have become RL ones. He was always the first to join in LJ meet-ups to greet visiting Live Journalers, sometimes even hosting them, making their trips to NYC with its expensive hotels possible for them. He'd come with suggestions of places to see, things to do, people to meet, restaurants to try, and make them feel welcome. I thought I was just one of a few intimate friends that he would send URLs and YouTube videos and articles of interest, burn DVDs of rare and out-of-print movies, and gift generously with the most fascinating of books, but in the many memorials I read, I learned he did the very same for scores and probably hundreds of friends far and wide. Have there been any plans for a memorial gathering for his NYC friends? ( Edit: see discussion in comments.) I think a dinner at Sripraphai, the deliriously tasty Thai restaurant out in his Queens neighborhood that he introduced to many of us, would be quite appropriate. Requiscat in pace. Usquequaque memor quod penetranter requiro.Tags: fabulousness, friends
jasfoup @ 12:16 pm: The Lure of Cake
http://jasfoup.blogspot.com/2010/01/lure-of-cake.html From the journal of Harold the FearlessWe walked back to the lake still expecting an ambush but we arrived at the shore unmolested. Thankfully the boat was still there or poor Felicia would be carrying me on her back all the way across. They did seem a bit dispirited. I don't know why – they've got off very lightly it seems, compared with what we might have been facing here. From what I've read of dark Faery a goblin-demon might have been the least of our worries. "Come on, troops," I said, trying to cheer them up and chivvy them along. "I can feel the pull of chocolate cake and Darjeeling." From the journal of Julie TurlingI managed to find several varieties of flowers in seed before we reached the shoreline. My heart fell when I saw the boat. I really hope Harold doesn't expect me to magic it back again. Opening a portal this soon after stuffing a demon inside the plane of the dead probably isn't such a good idea. From the journal of Felicia TurlingWe got back to the lake and Julie asked me to row. Given her reasons I'm fairly happy to, though I notice Harold didn't offer. Jasfoup's JournalI made up a tray of cheese and crackers, tea, biscuits, cake and some toasted crumpets, and took that and a book out to the stable, along with a small heater (even in June the early hours can be a tad cold) and a deckchair. It won't be the first time I've waited for Harold to stop dallying and it won't be the last, but I'm damned if I'll wait without some of the comforts of home. Stilton, anyone? Chocolate cake?

honestly people, how hard is it to make a decent jacket potato??? just ordered one fromour local sarnie shop that delivers and was hoping for tasty and so crisp I have to rip it with my teeth and buttery etc. what I got was lump of thing, barely cooked and definitely NOT crispy. GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR In other news, it's snowing again here so that'll be another few more inches on top of the already several we have at our house. I am however at work coz the buses were working this morning. BOO!!! was looking forward to a snow day. getting home yesterday I did spot a 7 foot snowman that had been constructed in the park. I say constructed coz they had also had to make a snow platform so they could get to his head. that's a very big snowman...

National Rile claims that trains from Catford Bridge are running fine, so *fingers crossed* I'll get to work fine today. I'm more concerned about getting home - train last night decided it didn't want to stop at Lewisham, and went straight through to Grove Park, which confused me, and meant I had a bus adventure to get home. Well, I'll keep hopeful for this evening. Hands still all infecty. Left hand has started to join in, and my fingers are beginning to prickle a bit, though that could be the cold. I can still type though, so woo! Come on flucloxacillin - work your antibiotic wonder! Right. Off to work.
